About Ruth Cole Burcaw
A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ruth is the older of two girls born to Hal, a Moravian pastor, and Joy, a registered nurse. Her Moravian ancestors span at least seven generations and included trailblazers who lived faith in community, embraced diversity, and sacrificed nearly everything for their mission.
After graduating from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA., Ruth worked for the first female mayor of Winston-Salem. While in city government, she earned her Master’s in Public Affairs from UNC-Greensboro. She later co-founded a corporate event management firm, specializing in experiential marketing and project management for organizations such as RJ Reynolds, Hanes Brands, Winston-Salem State University, and the NC Association of Teacher Assistants. In 2012, Ruth became Executive Director of Cooperative Ministries for the Moravian Church, Southern Province, a denominational agency supporting congregations and regional conferences of churches in their ministries.
Ruth’s work for the Moravian Church fulfilled a calling in which she used skills developed over
nearly 30 years in the public and private sectors. In the summer of 2021, she moved into the nonprofit sector, becoming the first Executive Director for City with Dwellings, a local organization dedicated to ending homelessness by building supportive, sustainable community with individuals experiencing homelessness.
Ruth and her husband, Chris, are empty nesters living in Lewisville, NC.
