Asheville Percussion Festival 2019 will be held Monday June 24-Monday July 1, in beautiful Asheville, NC.

Engage in a world of rhythm. Come enjoy a creative environment where percussionists, dancers, and music lovers of all traditions, gather to explore, create and innovate. The festival will be hosted by Asheville's ambassador of rhythm, River Guerguerian.

This year's theme, Rhythms of Diversity, brings to Asheville percussionists from around the globe. Our Residency Artists will collaborate and create original compositions during the week, which they will perform in a Masters Concert on Saturday evening. Some of the artists will also offer workshops throughout a week-long intensive program and facilitate a sound meditation together on Sunday.

This year's festival will be held at multiple locations, all within a mile from each other. Odyssey Community School: 90 Zillicoa St., Asheville, NC, 28801 - Intensive Workshops, Free Saturday Community Workshops & Demos, & Sunday Sound Meditation.  Rainbow Community School: 574 Haywood Rd. Asheville, NC 28806 - Marimba Workshops on Thursday/Friday. Black Mountain Museum & Arts Center: 120 College St, Asheville, NC 28801 - Gamelan Workshop and Concert on Friday. SCHEDULE  Separate tickets are required for each event, including free events. This year's festival is à la carte. Create your own expereince. Concert ticket required for intensive participants. See our Residency Artists for full list of Teachers and Performers.

Monday June 24-Wednesday June 26  10am-4:30pm - Room A 3-day intermediate/advanced level intensive with Master Frame Drummer Glen Velez, periodically accompanied by vocalist Loire Cotler. (Includes the opportunity to audition for a chance to perform a composition with Glen Velez and Loire Cotler.) At Odyssey Community School: 90 Zillicoa St. Asheville, NC 28801. Lunch break from 1-2:30pm.

Monday June 24 10am-4:30pm - Room B Full day intro-level intensive on Middle Eastern Drumming featuring Doumbek/Tonbak/Frame Drum with Naghmeh Farahmand. At Odyssey Community School: 90 Zillicoa St. Asheville, NC 28801. Lunch break from 1-2:30pm.

Tuesday June 25 10am-4:30pm - Room B Full day all-level intensive on Handpan with Adam Maalouf. At Odyssey Community School: 90 Zillicoa St. Asheville, NC 28801. Lunch break from 1-2:30pm.

Wednesday June 26 10am-4:30pm - Room B Full day intro-level intensive on West African Drumming with Adama Dembele. At Odyssey Community School: 90 Zillicoa St. Asheville, NC 28801. Lunch break from 1-2:30pm.

7-8:45pm Meet the Artists, Musical Interlude and Sound Meditation. Join us to mingle with our Percussion Festival Artists, be entertained by the exotic sounds of the Baharat Band from New York City, featuring Adam MaaloufMichael Burdi, and Miguel Santamaria, 7:20-8:00pm, and finish the evening with a soothing, restorative Sound Meditation by Megan Sprague 8-8:45pm. Cash Bar and light snacks for sale. Free event parking (tell attendant you are there for the Percussion Festival event).

2:30-5:30pm Half day intro-level intensive on Zimbabwean style Marimba with Sue Ford & Village Marimba. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn different parts to a composition and be able to play them together as an ensemble. Instruments and mallets will be provided. *At Rainbow Community School: 574 Haywood Rd. Asheville, NC 28806.

7-8:30pm Free Planetary Sounds Workshop with Billy Zanski

In this workshop we will explore the frequencies of celestial bodies and how to play gongs that are tuned to these Planetary vibrations.  We will have hands on practice with Alchemy bowls, Quartz bowls, monochords, and many other sound therapy tools.  We will also learn how to create different energies and feelings through a range of musical scales.  * At Skinny Beats: 4 Eagle Street, Asheville, NC 28801

Friday June 28 10am-2:00pm - Room A Brazilian Percussion Ensemble Workshop with Zabumba Asheville Samba facilitated by Diana Loomer and Agustin Frederic. Different types of Samba percussion instruments will be demonstrated and taught. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn different parts to a composition and be able to play them together as an ensemble. Instruments will be provided. 10am-1:00pm Half day intermediate level intensive on Zimbabwean style Marimba with Sue Ford & Village MarimbaThroughout the workshop, participants will learn different parts to a composition and be able to play them together as an ensemble. Instruments and mallets will be provided. *At Rainbow Community School: 574 Haywood Rd. Asheville, NC 28806. Open to intermediate percussionists with no prior marimba experience.

4-5:30pm Free Gamelan Workshop with Gamelan group Yowana Sari hosted by Michael Lipsey director of Aaron Copland School of Music at CUNY. Instruments provided. *At Black Mountain Museum & Arts Center: 120 College St, Asheville, NC 28801. Please register for this free ticket.

8:00pm A special evening of contemporary and traditional music featuring NYC Gamelan group, Yowana SariAt Black Mountain Museum & Arts Center: 120 College St, Asheville, NC 28801.

Saturday June 29 11:30am-4:00pm Free Saturday Community Workshops/Demos/Film. 11:30am-12:55pm - "Rhythms of Life" documentary film hosted by director Craig Norton 1:00-1:30pm - "Being in Rhythm" with Brandi Mizilca Hubiak & Trish DeGroot 1:45-2:45pm - "Drum Circle Techniques, Etiquette & Facilitation" with Larry McDowell 3:00-4:00 -  "Middle Eastern Rhythms" with Brian T. 8:00pm Masters Concert featuring original collaborative compositions created during the residency week by our world-renowned Residency Artists. *At Diana Wortham Theatre12 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801. Concert ticket required for entry into this event, even for intensive participants.

 Sunday June 30 12:00pm Sunday Sound Meditation will take place at 12:00pm on June 30. At Odyssey Community School: 90 Zillicoa St. Asheville, NC 28801. 

Monday July 1 10am-4:30pm - River's Studio Full day intensive on creating a Hybrid Drum Kit with River Guerguerian. Will include instruction on how to play both hand and stick drums, cymbals, shakers, and foot pedals. From simple to complex. At Odyssey Community School: 90 Zillicoa St. Asheville, NC 28801. Lunch Break 1-2:30pm.
